Clare Hammond, Piano

The Woolpit has a long tradition of inviting young and exciting pianists to the Festival. This year we are delighted to welcome Nottingham born Clare Hammond. Acclaimed by the Daily Telegraph as a pianist of ‘amazing power and panache’, Clare has performed at many European festivals, broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and collaborated with a number of string quartets, including the Brodsky, Endellion and Bedke. In 2016 she was presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist Award.

An advocate of contemporary music Clare has premiered major works by Robert Saxton, Kenneth Hesketh and Arlene Sierra, among others. The so far unnamed work by Ed Finnis in the programme this evening was premiered by Clare at Milton Court in the Barbican in March this year.

Clare has a deep interest in Polish music and culture and has performed in Poland on numerous occasions. In 2015 she starred as the young Miss Shepherd in the film adaptation of ‘The Lady in the Van’, by Alan Bennett and recorded the film soundtrack with George Fenton, the Philharmonia and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

This evening Clare is performing a selection of music spanning the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.
