From Opera via English Song to Broadway

Mark Saberton, baritone is joined by the pianist Matthew McCombie for tonight’s concert of music from opera, folk song and the musicals.

After gaining an honours degree in music at the University of Liverpool, Mark studied concert singing and opera at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has won numerous trophies and awards. Since then he has sung many different roles in major operas and oratorios and performed at recitals and opera galas at home and abroad. Mark has been described as ‘one of the most impressive character singers of his generation’ and is currently singing with the English National Opera.

We are delighted to welcome Matthew McCombie to the Woolpit Festival once again following his successful piano recital last year. Matthew has worked with a number of leading conductors including Barry Wordsworth and James Judd, performing works including the Grieg Piano Concerto, Stravinsky’s Petrushka and Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. As well as accompanying Mark he will be playing a number of solo pieces to contribute to tonight’s theme.
