Founded in 2006 by José McGill, Vagaband, a Norfolk based 8-piece plays original song-based roots music, a soulful mix between Americana, blues, jazz and rock. Their songs, by Greg Cook and José McGill, take the listener from Beatles’ inspired ragtime, through the horn driven soundtrack of New Orleans and on to the open landscape of reflective Americana. At the same time there is an underlying ever present Celtic-Britishness to the sound. Their music has been described as ‘eclectiana’ with the sound of mariachi horns, spaghetti westerns, jazz, country and blues. Their range of instruments, each band member plays at least two, is a soundman’s nightmare and an audience’s dream.
Since 2010 appearances have included Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Croissant Neuf and Maverick Festival. Their debut album ‘Town and Country’ was released on their own ‘Eggsong Recordings’ label in September 2012.
Band members are José McGill, vocals and guitar, Greg Cook, piano, Patrick Arbuthnot, pedal steel guitar, Joe Wright, fiddle and mandolin, Tristan Roche, bass, Dan Reynolds, drums, Ali Houiellebecq, saxes, clarinet, flute & whistle and Hugh Stanners, flugelhorn, trumpet & squeezebox.
